“Managing European External Borders in the Eastern Mediterranean: Threats of Violence and Violations” 7/5/2018

As part of the training seminar entitled “The Management of the EU’s External Borders in the Eastern Mediterranean” organized by the Jean Monnet European Center of Excellence at the University of Athens, a workshop entitled “Managing the European External Borders in the Eastern Mediterranean: The Middle East and Violations” took place on Monday, May 7, 2018, at the Armed Forces Club Event Room (Saroglio Palace).

The event was coordinated by the President of the European Center of Excellence Jean Monnet, Prof. Yiannis Valinakis. The first speaker at the conference was Mr. Gregory Tsaltas, Professor of International Law at Panteion University. Followed by Dr. Thanos Dokos, General Manager of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP). The European Commission was represented by Mr Aristidis Psarras, head of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Internal Affairs in Greece with the aim of supporting Greek authorities in managing migration flows.

The meeting was also attended by Dr. Marina Skordeli, Director of the Jean Monnet European Center of Excellence. Finally, Dr. Pantelis Michalis, Former Military and Center for Security Studies Officer, referred to the operation and actions of the Center for Security Studies, as well as to research and funding of European projects on border guarding.
